Old English, Cursive, or Block — Which Name Necklace Style Is You?

Old English (also called gothic or blackletter) reads bold and editorial — the classic nameplate look. Cursive script is softer and timeless, the style most people picture when they hear "name necklace." Block letters are clean, modern, and the easiest to read at a glance. This collection puts all three on one page so you can compare them side by side, and our live font preview lets you type your actual name and see it rendered in every style before you decide. Some names transform completely between blackletter and script — so see yours first, instead of guessing from a stock photo of someone else's name.

Real Materials, Not Fashion-Jewelry Shortcuts

A lot of "Old English necklaces" online are laser-cut stainless steel that looks flat and gray in person. Beleco is a jewelry factory: our nameplates are cut from sterling silver 925, finished in 14k gold plating or rose gold, and polished by hand. Each necklace is made to order in 3–5 days, so your name — in your chosen font and length — is the actual design, not a template pulled from a bin. Every order ships free to the US and UK and is backed by a 1-year warranty and a 100-day return window. Browse every style side by side in our full name necklaces collection.

Frequently asked questions

What font is "Old English"?

Old English is a blackletter (also called gothic) typeface, descended from the dense, angular script of medieval European manuscripts. On jewelry it reads bold and graphic — the classic nameplate look seen in hip-hop and Chicano-style pieces. Despite the name, it has nothing to do with the Old English language; it's purely a lettering style.

What is a nameplate necklace?

A nameplate necklace is one where the name is the pendant — the letters are cut from the metal itself rather than engraved onto a disc or bar. Ours are cut from sterling silver 925 and finished in 14k gold plating or rose gold, in Old English, cursive, or block lettering, then hand-polished before shipping.

Are cursive name necklaces real gold?

Ours are 14k gold plated over stainless steel — a genuine 14k gold finish over a durable steel core, not brass. That's why they carry proper weight and warmth in person. If you'd rather skip plating entirely, every design in this collection is also available in polished sterling silver 925.

What's the difference between gold vermeil and gold plated?

Vermeil is a legal standard: a sterling silver base with a gold layer at least 2.5 microns thick. "Gold plated" covers everything else — from generous plating over silver to a flash coat on steel, which is where cheap pieces fail. Our necklaces are 14k gold plated over stainless steel, and the finish is covered by our 1-year warranty.

Can I see my name in each font before I order?

Yes — that's exactly what our live font preview is for. Type your name and flip between Old English, cursive, and block styles to see the exact letterforms you'll receive; some names look dramatically different in blackletter than in script. It takes about ten seconds and removes all the guesswork.

Old English or block letters — which is easier to read?

Block letters win on instant readability — clean capitals that read at a glance. Old English trades some legibility for attitude: short names in blackletter stay very readable, while long names get intricate. Cursive sits in between. If the name runs past eight or nine letters and readability matters to you, block or cursive is the safer pick.
